Background: As a painter, Blu Smith has placed in international juried exhibits and her work is in various private collections. For a decade in New York City, she was involved in developing the downtown art arena. During this time, she helped support several small art galleries and performance spaces. Her efforts were instrumental in establishing the use of abandoned buildings and schools as art centers on Manhattan’s lower east side. Since returning south, Smith has served on the faculty at the University of Alabama – Huntsville, Calhoun Community College, Watkins College of Art and Design in Nashville, Tennessee, in addition to Athens State University.
